RIP-Server / J-RIP

An open foundationfor print.

RIP-Server (J-RIP) is a Rust-based RIP server project for local and edge environments. It converts PDF, PostScript and EPS documents into raster images and connects color management with print workflows.

01 / CAPABILITIES

From document to output.
Every stage accounted for.

01

Hybrid RIP

Isolated workers convert documents to TIFF, using MuPDF for PDF and Ghostscript for PostScript and EPS by default. The PDF engine can be selected explicitly.

02

Explicit color management

LittleCMS 2 provides ICC conversion for 8-bit RGB, CMYK and Gray data. Profiles, rendering intent and black point compensation are specified explicitly.

03

Traceable jobs

Jobs and stage history are stored in SQLite. Hold, cancel, resume and artifact hash verification are supported, with file export completion tracked separately from printer completion.

04

Connecting AI agents

ACX capability discovery and PrintIntent checks work alongside MCP operations and status queries. Permissions and approvals are checked when connecting agents to print workflows.

02 / WORKFLOW

Beyond rasterization.

Delivery checks paper, resolution and color capabilities against the configured destination. Uncertain deliveries are held for status verification rather than automatically repeated. This diagram describes the implementation; it does not guarantee print quality on physical devices.

03 / DEVELOPMENT STATUS

Where we are. What comes next.

This overview is based on the source code and development documentation.
Suitability for production use and physical print quality require separate validation.

🟢 [Done] Implemented
RIP conversion, persistent job management, ICC color processing, PWG conversion, print workflow orchestration and ACX/MCP interfaces.
🟠 [Next] Usability and operations
Web UI, operational usability and richer management across processing stages.
🔴 [Later] Advanced print processing
Distributed workers, 16-bit color processing, trapping and further extensions.
⭕️ [Pending] Physical-device validation
Paper output, color reproduction and model compatibility on real printers. No physical-device tests were performed while preparing this overview.
